 by Andrei Gorzo

1180 Grainger Hall on the UW-Madison campus (975 University Avenue, Madison)

Noted Romanian film critic Andrei Gorzo will give a public lecture on the UW-Madison campus, titled "Putting Romania on the Map: The New Romanian Cinema." The lecture will take
as its starting point the film "The Death of Mr. Lazarescu" in order to address the transformation of Romanian cinema, from one that was practically non-existent internationally (relative to other cinema industries in Eastern Europe) into a leading film industry.

Andrei Gorzo studied film history and film theory at Bucharest's National University of
Drama and Film and at NYU's (New York University's) Tisch School of the Arts. He is now a film critic for several Romanian publications (including "Dilema Veche", the most widely read cultural weekly in Romania), as well as an assistant professor of Cinema Studies at the National University of Drama and Film. Gorzo publishes extensively in cultural reviews and magazines and delivers lectures on variety of film topics. He is also well-known as a translator of British and American literature. He is the winner of The Romanian Film Critics’ Award for film journalism and reviews.

An event organized by The Center for Russia, East Europe, and Central Asia (CREECA) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and The Romanian Cultural institute
