Noted Romanian film critic Andrei
Gorzo will give a public lecture on the
UW-Madison campus, titled
"Putting Romania on the Map: The New Romanian Cinema." The lecture will
take as its
starting point the film
"The Death of Mr. Lazarescu" in
order to
address the transformation of Romanian cinema, from one that was
practically non-existent internationally (relative to other cinema
industries in Eastern Europe) into a leading film industry.
Andrei Gorzo studied film history and film theory at Bucharest's
National University of Drama
and Film
and at NYU's (New York University's) Tisch School of the Arts. He is
now a film critic for
several Romanian publications (including "Dilema Veche", the most
widely read cultural weekly in Romania), as well as an assistant
professor of Cinema Studies at the National University of Drama
and Film. Gorzo publishes extensively in cultural reviews and magazines
and delivers lectures on variety of film topics. He is also well-known
as a translator of British and American literature. He is the winner of
The Romanian Film Critics’ Award for film journalism and reviews.
