2007 New Year Party! Community Center in Eagle Heights, Dec 31 2006 (after 8PM) - Jan 1 2007 (up to 6AM).  Enjoy good Romanian food, music, dancing, champagne and fireworks at midnight. No reservations necessary. Potluck.

FEBRUARY 22 2007, 2120 Grainger Hall, Dialogue International Presents: Lecture "JEWS & TURKS: Model of Coexistence", Prof. Kemal KARPAT, Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (and a fellow Romanian)

APRIL 1, 2007, Eli KALMAN performs in the Sunday Afternoon Live from the Chazen concert "Musical Currents for Voice, Flute and Piano." University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh faculty members will perform a collection of works from Spain, France, Great Britain, Japan and the United States; 12:30 p.m.

Two Romanian films will be featured in the 2007 Wisconsin Film Festival. Tickets are NOW on sale on the festival's website, or at the door right before the show.

APRIL 22, 2007, Beethoven Piano Competition Winners Concert; congratulations to Olivia MUSAT, one of the three 2007 Beethoven Piano Competition winners (together with Natalie McKechnie and Erik Saunders). Olivia, a sophomore at UW-Madison, played the Sonata in E-flat major, Op. 27, No. 1, Quasi una Fantasia.

APRIL 26 at 7:00 pm - Public lecture, 1180 Grainger Hall on the UW-Madison campus (975 University Ave) "Putting Romania on the Map: The New Romanian Cinema", by film critic Andrei GORZO, Assist. Prof. of Cinema Studies at the National University of Drama and Film, Romania.

April 27: Work-farewell party for Gabriela CERGHEDEAN, who was offered a Assistant Professor position at the University of Wisconbsin, and will start her new appointment in Beloit in September.

APRIL 27-29 2007 Madison WI. The Romanian Cultural Institute (ICR), CREECA at UW Madison, and "From Romania" student association present:  ROMANIAN FILM FESTIVAL- a unique chance to watch several remarkable, award-winning Romanian films released in recent years. Event coordinator, Elena DRAGUSIN-RICHARD.

APRIL 27-29 2007 Madison, For the duration of the film festival, Cristel BAIU will present a selection of his art work in the MMoCA Lecture Hall, in a display on Romania's traditions and culture.

APRIL 29, 2007, from 6 PM (after the day's last festival film) PETRECERE at Eagle Heights Community Center.  Come to meet Romanians, chat along, snack on Romanian dishes. Potluck welcome. Bring your sneakers too, for the impromptu basketball game.

May 12: the university arboretum is in full bloom. You may want to hurry to catch the short-lived colors and scents of crabapple trees, lilac, blue magnolias and rhododendron. And we remember last year's visit there, when dear Liliana was with us...

May 28: Romanian film wins top prizes at the Cannes Film Festival! Jurors crowned Cristian Mungiu's "4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days" with the festival's top prize — the Palme d'Or. And "California Dreamin,'" by filmmaker Cristian Nemescu, who died in a car crash last year at age 27, won honors in a secondary competition called "Un Certain Regard." Read more...

JUNE JULY AUGUST- State Park weekend picnics, almost always accomodating time conflicts. We play soccer, beach voleyball or badminton, we hike, swim, canoe, cayak, and some even sail. Same-day notices not excluded :)

JUNE 7-10, Isthmus Jazz Fest. Get together at the Memorial Union terrace.
Check also the regular summer Jazz and Rock concerts on the terrace (rain Rathskeller). Free.


JULY 14-15, Art Fair on the Square, rated as one of the top Fine Arts events in the US, organized by the MMoCA Madison Museum of Contemporary Art. Presents the work of almost 500 artists selected from around the country (Romanians, check out Booth 743 for sculpture by Cristel BAIU). 49-th edition. Free.

JULY 21: Good-Bye party for Monica and Sorin GAROIU (6:30 PM at Eagle Heights community center), moving to Colorado Springs where Monica was offered a Visiting Professor appointment. JULY 22 follow up at Devil's lake (pictures!). AUG 1, 6PM, Sundance Terrace: follow up, girl's good bye -evening out.

AUGUST 15: Good bye and good luck to Patricia MUSAT junior undergraduate at UW-Madison, who will study abroad for one year in Paris, France.

AUGUST 18-26,  Token Creek Chamber Music Festival.  Romanian-born pianist Eli KALMAN performs in the opening concert and in the Haydn closing concert, together with Rose Mary Harbison, violin, and Parry Karp, 'cello.

AUGUST: Good bye and good luck to  Ina POPOVICI, who moves to San Francisco.

SEPT 24: "An Ever Expanding EU: The 2007 Accession of Romania" Lecture by the Hon. George Predescu, consul general of Romania in Chicago. Location: 7:00 pm, Vandeberg Auditorium, Pyle Center. Sponsored by CREECA and the European Union Center of Excellence (EUCE). In English.  A reception will follow the lecture.

SEPT 27: Dragos Tuta launches the Romanians in Madison / Wisconsin google group "to facilitate the communication between the Romanian communities in the region, to promote cultural, educational and business -related events, to foster an informed Romanian community and build new friendships." Meetings are Thursdays 7PM at the Memorial Union (Rathskeller or Lakefront), every 2 weeks. In Romanian.

SEPT 30: 12:30PM, "Sunday Afternoon Live, from Chazen" concert series, in Brittingham Gallery at the Chazen Museum for Art: Klara Fenyo Bahcall, violin, and Eli Kalman, piano, will interpret works by two Romanian-born composers: Dinu Lipatti (Sonatina for Violin and Piano) and Ervin Junger (Sonatina for Violin and Piano), besides Ernst von Dohnanyi's Sonata for Violin and Piano in C sharp minor Op.21. The concert will be broadcast live on Public Radio.

OCT 12, 17 and NOV 17, 21: European Championship Qualifying games. Get together. Live streaming from UEFA. Here is a summary of all groups' results.

OCT 19: 4PM, Pyle Center, Keynote address sponsored by CREECA: "Writing the History of East-Central European Literary Cultures: Transnational and Comparative Paradigms" by Dr. Marcel Cornis-Pope, Virginia Commonwealth University. M. Cornis-Pope, born in Arad, Romania, a PhD from the University of Timisoara.

NOV 1: We are grateful to Ioana Baiu for launching the Romanian Student Organization "From Romania" in 2003 and we thank her for her activity during these five years. We welcome the new contact person for the organization, Daniela Banu, graduate student in mathematics at UW-Madison.

NOV 3: 8PM Mills Concert Hall: Faculty Concert Series, featuring Romanian-born pianist Eli Kalman, and cellist Parry Karp, with Suzanne Beia, violin. Highlighting a truly exquisite programme of chamber music by Louis Vierne, Robert Kahn and Charles-Valentin Alkan.

DEC 1: Romanian National Day feast! Eagle Heights Community Center, 7PM. Enjoy Romanian food (potluck) and music.
