A LIST OF PAST HAPPENINGS - 2008

JAN 1: New Year party! Eagle Heights, starting from 8:30PM. Enjoy good Romanian food, music, dancing, champagne and fireworks at midnight. No reservations necessary. Potluck.

JANUARY: Good bye and good luck to Olivia and Ioana who will study abroad for one semester, in Paris, France.

FEBRUARY: Good bye and good luck to Dragos Tuta, who moves to Great Britain.

MARCH 7-9, at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art: the second edition of the Romanian Film Festival in Madison. The programming ranges from the first-ever Romanian winner of the Palme d'Or, the 1956 "Short History" by Ion Popescu Gopo, to widely acclaimed 2007 productions such as "California Dreamin'" by Cristian Nemescu and "The Rest is Silence" by Nae Caranfil.
The Romanian Film Festival is organized by ICR Bucharest and CREECA of UW-Madison. All films have English subtitles and the admission is free.


APRIL 4, 9:15PM, at the UW Cinematheque, the 2008 Wisconsin Film Festival presents "California Dreamin' ", by Cristian Nemescu. Visit the festival website for information on ticket purchases.

APRIL 13, 12:30PM, Chazen Museum of Art, Eli Kalman, piano, and  the Infusion Chamber Ensemble, present music by Torke (After the Forest Fire), Harbison (Twilight Music), Daugherty (Diamond in a Rough) and Ewazen (Ballade, Pastorale and Dance). The concert is a live broadcast on Wisconsin Public Radio, in the 'Sunday Afternoon from Chazen' series.

APRIL 15, 7-9PM UW International Festival. Great Hall Memorial Union. Experience different cultures by interacting with student organization members and participating in activities. There will be free deserts/food from different countries, activity booths such as calligraphy, origami (put up by WISA), people wearing traditional clothing, performances.

APRIL 12, the Orpheum Theatre presents "4 months, 3 Weeeks, 2 Days" by Cristian Mungiu, a film awarded the Palme d'Or top award at Cannes in 2007. Tickets may be purchased at the theatre box office. Check the theatre website for dates and times.

MAY: Congratulations to Ioana Baiu who graduates University of Wisconsin-Madison with two majors, in Neuroscience and French Literature, with honors in the majors, and receives the Dean's Award for the class of 2008!

JUNE 1, 2-5 PM, Eagle Heights Community Center, Madison: You are all invited to a taste of Romanian food tomorrow afternoon, our long overdue picnic/barbecue that we talked about during the Romanian Film Festival. Bring a dish to share (or fruit, bottled water or anything you'd like) and come to enjoy the beautiful weather with us. Bring your families as well!

Come to say good-bye to Elena and Paul, who are moving out to Arizona. If you don't get to see them now, you will see them only next year, at the 2009 Romanian Film Festival.


JULY: Good bye and good luck to Ioana Prica, who leaves for a new job, to Milano, Italy.

JUNE JULY AUGUST- State Park weekend picnics, almost always accommodating time conflicts. We play soccer, beach volleyball or badminton, we hike, swim, canoe, kayak, and some even sail. Same-day notices not excluded (Romanian style :)

AUGUST: Good bye and good luck to Ioana, who moves to Boston, MA, to attend Harvard Medical School.

AUGUST 23-31, Token Creek Chamber Music Festival. Romanian-born pianist Eli KALMAN performs in the 'Bach's Art of Fugue and Kurtag's Bach transcriptions' concerts (August 26, 27) and in the 'Haydn and Harbisson' concerts (August 30, 31).

SEPTEMBER 21, 12:30PM, Chazen Museum of Art: Klara Bahcall, violin and Eli Kalman, piano, will perform Beethoven: Violin Sonata #10 in G, op. 96; Respighi: Violin Sonata in d minor (1897); and Brahms: Violin Sonata #3 in d minor. Free admission.

SEPTEMBER 12-20: The fifth annual Madison World Music Festival, in the Memorial Union. All events are free and open to the public. See website for schedule and details.

OCTOBER 7: Congratulations, it's a girl! Adriana and Zia have a daughter, Roxana!

NOVEMBER 8, 8pm, Mills Concert Hall, Faculty Concert Series: Eli Kalman, piano, with Parry Karp, cello, perform music by Alexander von Zemlinsky, Sulkhan Tsintsadze, Benjamin Britten, Sergei Prokofiev and Camille Saint-Saens.

NOVEMBER 23, 12:30-2PM, Gallery Three of the Chazen Museum of Art, "Sunday Afternoon from the Chazen" concert series broadcast live on Wisconsin Public Radio; Parry Karp, cello and Eli Kalman, piano.


NOVEMBER 29, 6:30PM, Eagle Heights Community Center, PETRECERE Sf. Andrei. Come all to meet friends and enjoy great Romanian food (potluck).
